Florida aviation lawyer, Timothy M. Ravich, was recently interviewed by The Atlantic in an article entitled "If I Fly a UAV Over My Neighbors House, Is It Trespassing," a feature about the evolving tension between privacy rights and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles or so-called drones.

The University of Miami School of Law awarded Timothy M. Ravich with its Alumni Leadership Award at its Annual Dade County Judicial reception, while Florida International University's ("FIU") College of Law recognized him with its prestigious Torch Award.  Mr. Ravich was recognized for his service as the President of the Dade County Bar Association ("DCBA"), the largest voluntary bar association in the State of Florida.  During his term, the DCBA opened its membership to law students by forming student chapters of the DCBA on campus.

"I am honored by these awards.  Connecting today's generation of lawyers with tomorrow's lawyers is critically important for promoting mentorship and professionalism in an economic environment where the law is as much about business as it is about the law," Ravich said.

Mr. Ravich teaches aviation and space law at both law schools.

Timothy M. Ravich, a Board Certified Florida aviation lawyer, was recognized by the Florida Bar Aviation Law Committee for his service and leadership as its Chairman for two consecutive terms, from 2010-2012.

The scope and function of the Aviation Law Committee is to study recent developments of law, legislation and regulations in the field of aviation law, and keep the members of the Bar informed of significant developments in this field. The committee should maintain liaison with agencies or local, state and federal governments concerned with aerospace law; study and consider matters of legislation, regulations or problems of aerospace law as developed by the committee or assigned to it by the president or the Board of Governors; and assist in developing continuing legal education courses for persons designated in aviation law.

Timothy M. Ravich, a Florida aviation lawyer, has become one of only 34 lawyers in the State of Florida to be certified as an expert or specialist in the are of aviation lawyer by the Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization and Education.

"Aviation law" includes all facets of the law dealing with the ownership, operation, maintenance, and use of aircraft, airports and airspace.  it also involves licensing and aeromedical issues encompassed by the Federal Aviation Act and the associated federal aviation regulations promulgated thereunder.  It also encompasses the laws that have been developed to regulate the use of outer space.

To be board certified by the Florida Bar means that a Florida lawyer has special knowledge, skills and proficiency in a specific field of law. To become a board certified specialist, a lawyer must be an active member in good standing of The Florida Bar, practice law for a minimum of five years, complete approved legal education programs, demonstrate substantial experience in the specialty area, be favorably evaluated by judges and other lawyers as to competency and professionalism in the specialty field, and pass a comprehensive written examination in the specialty area.  The Florida Supreme Court established Florida’s board certification program so that consumers can identify  qualified legal specialists who are dedicated to professional excellence.

As a Florida aviation lawyer, Mr. Ravich is the author of numerous publications, including a course book entitled "Aviation Law after September 11th" (Vandeplas 2010).  He also appears regularly in the media in connection with aviation and space law issues. He earned his M.B.A. from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Aviation Policy and Planning, and he designed and teaches an aviation and space law course at the University of Miami School of Law and Florida International University ("FIU") College of Law.
